Social Media Hiatus
On a recent family zoom call, my sister in law shared how she's been on a "news diet" for about a week (shielding herself from any reports of the concurrent national and global crises), inspired by a Buddhist friend. She said her mood and outlook have been MUCH better, as a result. She has been more productive, and generally more focused on her immediate life.
Sounds pretty good, right? Inspired by this, I decided to take similar steps. For me, this means not scrolling social media. So I logged out of Mastodon and Bluesky three days ago and haven't been on since. After just three days I can report similar results. My mood has been better, and I've had more time to spend on daily life. I've cleared several "get to it eventually" projects that have been looming, and put in more billable time at work. Very positive things.
Is it socially irresponsible to ignore the ills of the world for a while? Especially right now? Possibly. But some unplug and recharge time is also necessary.
